MedStar Behavioral Health
In addition to physical illnesses, injuries and diseases; MedStar Health also treats behavioral health conditions at many of their locations. Unfortunately, these services and information regarding behavioral health and mental illness are hard to come by. To address this, stakeholders requested an update to the current behavioral health information architecture, layout and content. Unlike many of the MedStar websites the goal of this site was not patient acquisition but rather to inform and educate users and send the message that they are not alone.

Rather than creating a stark site with excessively text heavy facts and data, the proposed design would be inviting, friendly and engaging. The digital team walked a fine line of creating a design and content that was sympathetic and appropriate but also more exciting and hopeful than the typical mental health site. A surprisingly well received suggestion was to use animated illustrations that we believed appropriately captured conditions rather than photography that has been seen so many times before.
When a users lands on the homepage, they would be greeted with patient videos providing hope and a sense of community. From there, they can navigate to information appropriate to their or their loved one’s condition using these relatable animations as friendly guides to the content.
